Guidelines
The Awards
The Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence were introduced in 1989 to recognise and reward outstanding contributions to the University by staff from all sectors of employment. All general and academic staff of the University are eligible to be nominated for an award. Nominations of both individuals and groups will be considered.
The award consists of:
- A citation of excellence and presentation at a special award ceremony
- Inclusion of the award on files in Human Resources
- A development grant.
The development grant must be used within one year of conferral.
Criteria For Awards
This year's awards will recognise groups and individuals who have nurtured a culture which supports significant innovation directly linked to learning and research, which should accelerate the realisation of the University's Vision, Mission and Values (see Vision Statement).
Assessment Procedure
Nominations will be judged according to the following criteria:
- Extent to which the work or achievement of the nominee(s) reflects a degree of excellence beyond the normal call of duty in the category and level of employment.
- Citing of specific and concrete examples of achievement rather than general, unsupported claims of excellence. The case will be better supported by documented examples, particularly of team achievements.
- Wider recognition of the impact of the work and achievements from both internal and external sources.
Nomination Procedure
- Nominees are to be sponsored by two or more sponsors. Sponsors may include staff, students, alumni or research colleagues. Self sponsorship is not acceptable. In the case where a nominee is a member of a group, the focus should be on the personal contribution of the individual. A whole work group may also be nominated.
- All nominations should be prepared on the standard nomination form. Sponsors should summarise in no more than three additional pages the best possible argument for their nominee(s). Where links or activities external to Curtin are being referred to, references or quotations from a person in a position to comment authoritatively on the significance of the work of the nominee(s) should be included.
- For reasons of equity, nominations are classified into several categories of staff and an attempt is made to distribute awards across all categories, taking into account the number of applications.
- Nominations should not exceed four pages including the cover sheet. Presentation should be in a minimum 11 point type.
Assistance For Nominators
Committee members are happy to provide assistance to nominees in the preparation of their nomination. In order to do this indication of nominations should be sent to Mrs Jennie Walsh, Building 599 or J.E.Walsh@curtin.edu.au. Following receipt of the initial nomination the committee, should you request it, will assign a member to assist in preparation of the final application.
Nomination forms must be received at the Vice-Chancellors Office by the deadline. The deadline date for submission of the 2008 VC Excel Awards is Friday 26 September, 2008.
Important Note: The success of the nomination depends critically on the presentation of the sponsors' evidence and arguments as to the outstanding nature of the work of the nominated individual or group.
